What is a JFIF file?
JFIF is simply a JPG image with a different file ending. Windows and some browsers save images from Google, Gemini and other websites as .jfif. Many apps, upload forms and phones do not recognise that ending, even though the picture inside is a normal JPG.
Is there any quality loss?
No. Because JFIF and JPG are the same format, the image is kept exactly as it is and only gets the .jpg ending. Nothing is re-compressed.
Why do my downloads save as JFIF?
Windows links JPG images to the .jfif ending in its settings, so Chrome and Edge sometimes use it when you save an image. Converting here is the quickest fix for files you already have.
Private by design
Every conversion happens inside your browser using your own device. Files are never uploaded to a server, so they cannot be seen, stored or shared by anyone.
Frequently asked questions
What does JFIF stand for?
JFIF stands for JPEG File Interchange Format. It is the standard way JPG images are stored, which is why a .jfif file is really a JPG.
How do I open a JFIF file?
Any image viewer or browser can open it: right-click the file › Open with › Photos, Paint or Chrome. If an app or website refuses it, convert it to JPG here.
How do I stop Windows saving images as JFIF?
Open the Registry Editor, go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type\image/jpeg, and change the “Extension” value from .jfif to .jpg. Restart your browser and new images will save as JPG.
JFIF vs JPG – what is the difference?
Only the file ending. The image data, quality and size are the same.
Can I just rename .jfif to .jpg?
Yes, that works too, because the image data is the same. This tool does it for up to 20 files at once and checks that each file really is a JPG image.
Are my images uploaded?
No. Everything happens in your browser – your images never leave your device.
Is it free?
Yes, it is free with no limits and no sign-up.
